Each one of those players had something about them. Lendl and Edberg- nice guys who played the game in the traditional way. When their time was up Sampras and Agassi came along to take over. Sampras, a monkey like creature who had no personality and married Adam Sandler’s girlfriend from the cult movie “Billy Madison”. Sampras won a lot of money and  tournaments being “mister nice guy” but not a lot of fans. Agassi on the other hand had the wild “David Lee Roth” hair style, wore fluoro cloured shirts and sweatbands, plus he was always agressive and fought over every call he disagreed with. Agassi also married Brook Shields (before his current wife Seffi Graf….What amazing tennis playing children they will produce). Agassi was that wild boy next door the fans loved.

With a few pretenders coming and going such as Jim Courier, Pat Rafter, Leighton Hewitt, Gustavo Cuertin, Juan Carlos Ferrero but to name a few we now find ourselves in the “Federer/Nadal” generation. Roger Federer, again is our Mr Nice guy who has no weakness against a fiery sex symbol in Rafael Nadal who plays every point as if it’s his last. 

It brings us to the eternal question…..Is he the greatest ever tennis player? Like football has the great Maradona vs Pele debate, tennis now has a pool of a few to choose from. Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer are just some of the names that always come up. Borg left on such a high and nobody got to see whether he had the prowess to come back after going on an inevtible downward slide like all tennis greats. Sampras never really had the fan base for anybody to go “wow” about him. Federer on the other hand now has finally won his first Grand Slam on Clay .Winning in straight sets against Robin Sodderling of Sweden thus becoming only the 6th male ever to win all 4 grand slams. Is he the greatest ever though?

The debate will always continue I suppose, even when he over-takes Sampras to win his 15th grand slam and becomes the only male ever to do so.

Records are made to be broken, and history is always in the making. With Federer it seems like just another day at the office……

Now that he is another one of those unlucky people who were killed whilst committing a sexual act, I am sure his cult status will only grow. I am not one to condone these sexual acts, I mean hey- I’ll try anything once…sometimes twice, but to get to the point where I need to strangle myself during a wank I must be clutching at “the variety” straws. Baring in mind Carradine was the ripe old age of 72 he must have really been scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Taking nothing away from David, his family or celebrating his wonderful life and career….It got me wondering to how an “asphyxiation” must come about. Do we wake up one day and think ” well I’ve tried everything else honey, what’s wrong with getting a dwarfe involved?” Are we at a point where there is no such thing as normal anymore? Society almost says there is no normal.

Take the late Michael Hutchence from Aussie super band , INXS. Dead. Strangled himself while performing a sexual act. He was in his 30′s when he died. How many “run-of-the-mill” shags did he exhaust before getting the leather belt out around his neck? Carradine to his defence was twice his age. 

There is that part of me that takes my hat off to Carradine. Like I am the only one in an empty theatre clapping for him as I think “well, if you’re going to die, you might as well go out with a bang”. Bravo…Bravo.  Is that wrong?

I leave you with this quote from the police officer in Thailand during a press conference after his death. It read ” A rope was attached to his neck………And his penis”.

I hope that won’t be etched on his tombstone.

I got to thinking…There are always 2 sides to every tale. In this case it’s who do you believe: The strpper or the slease. I mean, don’t get me wrong I have been to many a strp club in my time from Damascus in Syria to Amsterdam, and the stereotype of both sides of the stage are there. I can’t imagine though that a stripper would kick a guy’s head in unprovoked.

This is going somewhere, trust me. Who are we to judge? I already judged him before reading the article, I judged him even more when I saw his” fat face and beard” mugshot, I had finally made my mind up that he was well and truly guilty when they described the stripper as “small, petit and inncocent”.  It made me realise that I am quick to judge things and people based on the way people are writing or angling a story, or a book by its cover as they say. This is a habit I must stop.

Another interesting case: There is a man walking down the street in his 60′s, torn jeans, ragged hair, smoking and a little bit jaded.  Another young guy accross the road is in a suit, confident stride, well built and has a folder in his hand.

Which one is more successful?

The guy in his 50′s is Mick Jagger, and the young guy is on his way to court facing charges of armed robbery.

1.Diego Maradona. The first real great player I laid eyes on. In 1986 and then later with Napoli, he was as close to a one man team as you could get.

2. Gary Lineker. An old fashioned striker who had that knack of scoring goals in and around the box.

3. Marco Van Basten. Unbelievable to watch. Technically gifted and one of those rare players that didn’t have a weakness.

4. Ruud Gullit. Leader, goal-scorer, goal-provider. One player that you knew that if you had them on the pitch you were always a chance.

5. Michael Laudrup. Denmark, Juve, Barca, Real. One player who achieved almost everything and could turn the game in a second.

6. Denis Bergkamp. The iceman. Even as a Spurs fan, you still have to appreciate how good he was.

7. Teddy Sheringham. Nothing flashy, but scored and provided goals wherever he played.

8. Matt Le Tissier. Scorer of amazing goals, and one of the rare loyal servants in our beautiful game.

9. Georgi Kinkladze. “Kinky” never passed the ball, I think that’s why he scored some of the greatest goals ever in premiership history for Man City.

10. Jay Jay Okocha. Arguably the greatest African player of all time. Dribbler of the highest quality and finisher from all over the park. Brilliant.
